I've kind of come full-circle with this tutorial. The very first PSP tut I ever did (as in following, not writing! :) was in PSP5. It was how to create a bordered background tile. So, I thought why not write a tutorial on how to create exactly the same thing in V8? After all with this version, it's almost like learning PSP all over again!
As I experimented with this tut, I discovered (without really intending to) that I'd incorporated a lot of familiar things that experienced PSP users would already know, including how to change colours and textures, using gradients, the crop tool, the add borders tool, etc. However, all of those features (except for the eye-dropper tool) are totally different now. So, not only will you get to make a pretty background border that looks like a curtain, but you'll also be getting lots of good practice in some of the new ways of doing familiar things.
Note: This tutorial may be downloaded or printed out for personal use only. It must not, under any circumstances, be taken from this site in its entirety or in parts and passed around Yahoo or MSN Groups, re-posted on other websites or passed on to other individuals. Placing a link on your Group's site or your own site is fine, and passing links around is also fine. But links ONLY please, and remember to acknowledge that they are external links, otherwise many of your visitors will assume they are still on your site. There are logos available on my resources page if you wish to use one. Thank you for your co-operation.
As always, if you have any questions about this tut, or any comments or suggestions in general your feedback is always welcome. Just click on the link above to contact me.
1. Open a new image, 120 x 120, with a transparent background.
2. Run your mouse over the background fill in the Materials Palette (see below left - yours will obviously be a different colour to mine!) and right-click. When the pop-up opens (see below middle) left-click on it to select blue (or alternatively, click 'other' and manually change it to, R:0, G:0, B:244 or HTML: #0000FF in the Colour dialogue tab). This will be our new background colour (see below right).
3. Now run your mouse over the foreground fill in the Materials Palette (i.e. the white box above - yours will probably show a different colour) and left-click. This will bring up the Material dialogue box. Select the Texture box, left-click on the drop-down menu and scroll down to where the Plastic 1 texture is. Select that, and hit OK (see below left).

4. Your materials palette should now look something like what I have (below). Don't worry if your foreground isn't white, that doesn't matter.

Update: Since writing this tut, I've discovered that not all versions of PSP8 (Trials, etc.) will have the same texture presets. I originally wrote this tut in one of the Beta versions. If your version of PSP8 doesn't have this preset, just try one of the others for a similar effect - experiment and see which one you like the best :) |
5. Left-click again on the foreground box and this time select the gradient tab. Scroll down the drop-down menu and choose the Metallic Silver gradient, with these settings: Angle: 90, Repeats: 0, Style: Linear (the first icon - see below.). Leave everything else as it is and hit OK.
