Customizing the Standard Toolbar - Page 2

5.  Let's go back to the Categories list. Scroll right down to where it says 'View'. The Categories list corresponds to the same categories that are already up there on the drop-down menu, so if I go to 'View' I know this is where all of the options for the zoom tool will be, such as the Zoom to 100%.

After you've clicked on 'View' to highlight it, go over to the Commands list and scroll down to where it says 'Zoom to 100%'. Now drag this up to the shortcut bar, just like we did before. Now we have....oh, TWO shortcuts up there - one of which we don't want anymore. To delete a shortcut from the bar, hold down the ALT key and at the same time drag it right off the bar with the mouse, onto anywhere that isn't an active part of the interface (such as the grey background that an open image sits on). As soon as you do this, it'll disappear. Ahhh...that's better! :)

Tip: If you leave the Customize dialogue box open on the screen while you delete shortcuts by dragging them off the toolbar, you don't need to press the ALT key while you're dragging.

If you'd like to see all the commands, for everything all at once so you can add several shortcuts at the same time, scroll down the Categories list to the very bottom, to where it says 'All Commands' (see below). Now you'll see the information on the right-hand side list (the Commands list) is expanded somewhat. What's more, it's in alphabetical order so commands and tools are easier to find. Just highlight whatever it is you want, and drag it right on up there again.

The arrows indicate that there is more than one option available for a particular tool

Tip: You can have as many shortcuts up there as you like, and you can even create your own groups and categories.

6.  To create a new group complete with dividers, go to View>Customize, OR right-click anywhere on either the toolbar or toolbox and click on 'Customize'. Right-click on top of the first shortcut you want in your new group. This will bring a small pop-up box (see below). Click on 'Start Group'. This creates a new divider and automatically puts it in place for you.

Now add your shortcuts to your new group - they can go up there in any order that you like. The groups can also be as small or as large as you like. You can even change the order in which they appear on the toolbar at any time, simply by clicking and dragging the icons around. To delete, either drag them right off the menu, or with the Customize dialogue box open you can right-click over the icon you wish to delete and click on 'Delete' on the Start Groups menu.

You can have any shortcuts, in any order, in any grouping you wish.

For the people who prefer to use the keyboard commands as shortcuts, good news! I've written a tutorial on how to do just that. You'll find it right here. In the meantime have fun making new shortcuts for the toolbar :)
