Jake the Snake - Page 2

5.  Now we need to make a snakeskin pattern to fill Jake's head with. Open a new image, 100 x 100, transparent background. Open the spiral snakeskin tube again, this time at 50% scale. Drag the tube over the entire image, zig-zagging back and forth until you see no spaces showing (see below, left.) When you've finished, select it for your pattern fill, by right-clicking on the foreground colour in the materials palette, and then, Other>Pattern>choose the snake-fill (below, right).

Fill up the entire image, so no space is showing from underneath.

6.  Change the angle of the pattern fill, to 90 degrees (as shown below, left). When you've done that, click on the head image to activiate it again and select the paint-bucket tool in the toolbox. Left-click inside the head to fill it with the snake pattern.

7.  While the head is still selected, we're going to copy and paste it straight onto Jake's body. Go back to the original image of Jake, and go to the layer we named 'head'. Paste the head as I've done (below).

8.  Now we'll do Jake's eyes. Unzip the file you downloaded, and open up 'jakeseye.pspimage'. Now go to the 'eye1' layer. Copy and paste the eye right onto the side of his head, like I've done below, deselect, and then do the same for his other eye, making sure you're on the 'eye2' layer. (It's always best to use layers for placement, as you can move your selections separately if you're not happy with your placement).

9.  Now go to the tongue layer. Change your foreground in the materials palette from the snakeskin pattern to red. With the brush tool set to default, choose a low size setting (I went with 1, above right) and draw a tongue - it doesn't have to be straight, the squigglier the better :-).
