How to Create a Paling Fence in PSP8 - Part 2

6.  Now all we need to do is to stroke the brush downwards in a series of random strokes starting from the middle of the image and going down to the bottom (see at right). You can do this quite effectively enough with a mouse, but if you've got a Wacom pen and tablet you'll have even greater control. Having said that though, don't worry if your strokes aren't exactly touching or turning out perfectly straight - tumbling down paling fences don't look that perfect either. I created my original fence for the 'Mooncat' image with a Wacom Graphire, but for the record the one I'm creating for this tutorial is with the mouse just to show it can look equally effective.

7.  Continue on with the brush strokes until you fill up the width of the image (see below, left). Now all we have to do is to use the Sharpen filter to get those little ridges in the wood to well, come out of the woodwork, so to speak ;-) Go to Adjust>Sharpness>Sharpen and apply. Now go back to the Sharpen filter again, but this time: Adjust>Sharpness>Sharpen More. Go back several times and repeat this process until you get something like I have, (below right). For the record, I used the 'Sharpen More' filter 3 times, but experiment and see exactly what suits you.

Fill up the whole width of the image with brush strokes - they don't have to be perfect. As a matter of fact, the less perfect they are the better in this case.

Apply the Sharpen More filter several times for this 'ridgy' effect. Even the black gaps look effective as they look like natural splits in the wood.

8.  Well, that's about it! Stay tuned for more tutorials :)
