8. I want you to imagine that we're going to create an image with several layers (don't worry - we won't be doing that in this tutorial ;-). For the sake of clarity and to make things easier in the long run, let's start naming our layers now. If it's not already highlighted, click on the 'Raster 1' layer to select it. After you've done that, immediately right-click on the same layer again. This will bring up another pop-up, the layers menu (see right). Click on Properties (as shown).
This opens the Layer Properties box (the one we opened before, remember?) Just in case you don't I'll jog your memory below ;-)

9. Click inside the Name box. Delete what's there (i.e. 'Raster 1') and type in 'Flood Fill layer'. Click OK. (Don't worry about changing the other settings - we don't need to touch those at all). Voila...this is what our layers palette looks like now (below): |
10. Well, that's one way you can change the name of a layer, but there's a better (and much faster) way. Did you notice that the layers menu had quite a few other options? Select the 'Raster 2' layer, and right-click on it to bring up the Layers Menu. This time, instead of clicking on 'Properites' click on the option immediately above it on the list: 'Rename'. This lets you change the name of the layer directly inside the layers palette itself:
11. OK, just one more thing to do and we've finished! Left-click on the 'Flood Fill layer' on the palette, and drag it to the top of the list. (If you're doing it right, you'll be able to see a small hand appear instead of the cursor arrow). Release the mouse - and this is what you should now see:
Note the two-headed arrow . . . these are the two layers that we've swapped around.
OK, that's it - you've finished. This is officially the end of Part 1 of the Understanding Layers tutorial. It's not really necessary to save this image (we were only using it to check out the layers palette) but if you want to save it for your own use to remember what you've done then go right ahead. Give yourself a pat on the back and go grab yourself a coffee/cigarette/some fresh air/whatever. Hey, you deserve it :)
